In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The ceremonial reception included military honors, during which Kennedy, together with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, reviewed an honor guard. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the German-American partnership as well as Western solidarity toward the divided city of Berlin.
