In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership in the context of the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy at an official reception, where he greets dignitaries – accompanied by civilian delegation members and uniformed officers. Such greeting ceremonies were part of the protocol of the multi-day visit, which took him through several German cities. The visit was regarded as a strong symbol of American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
