During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, hundreds of thousands lined the streets of the visited cities. Many onlookers used elevated positions and binoculars to catch a glimpse of the U.S. President. The extraordinary enthusiasm of the population was a defining characteristic of the trip and documents the close emotional connection between the West German population and the United States in the context of the Cold War.
