During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by enormous crowds at several stops. The photograph shows the extraordinary enthusiasm of the German population, who streamed together in dense masses in a city square. Kennedy’s visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to underscore American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany and divided West Berlin.
