In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. Large crowds assembled along the travel route to see the President; many spectators used elevated positions and binoculars to obtain a better view of the motorcade. Against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, the visit was an important symbol of Western solidarity and provoked extraordinary enthusiasm among the German population.
