During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy attended several official receptions. The photograph shows Kennedy in conversation with Erich Mende, chairman of the FDP and Federal Minister, during an evening event. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic alliance as well as solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany.
