In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph shows Kennedy in evening dress at an official reception in conversation with Erich Mende, Chairman of the FDP and Federal Minister for All-German Affairs. The visit took place under the shadow of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic alliance.
