During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy also inspected units of American armed forces stationed in Germany. The presence of U.S. missile systems and tanks illustrated the military commitment of the United States in the Federal Republic in the context of the Cold War. The stationing of American troops was regarded as a central security guarantee for West Germany and West Berlin against the Soviet threat. Kennedy’s visit to the armed forces underscored the determination of the United States to defend its allies in Europe.
