In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. A standard component of such state visits was the inspection of American troops stationed in Germany as part of NATO commitments. The presence of these units was, in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, a central symbol of the American security guarantee for West Germany and West Berlin.
