As part of his visit to Germany from June 23–26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy inspected units of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. The visit also served as a demonstrative reaffirmation of the American military presence in the Federal Republic. Against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, the stationing of American troops was intended to underscore the U.S. security guarantee for West Germany and West Berlin.
