During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy attended several military reception ceremonies. The photograph shows Kennedy standing in an open vehicle while inspecting a formation of American soldiers bearing regimental flags. Military parades and honor guards were part of the protocol program of the trip, which took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and Western commitment to the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
