During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by extraordinarily large crowds at several stops. The American flags that were displayed and the dense throngs of people testified to the enormous enthusiasm with which the West German population welcomed Kennedy. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected in 1961, and held great symbolic significance for German-American relations.
