During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets. The enormous enthusiasm and crush of crowds at the parade routes repeatedly led to emergency medical interventions. The image shows two Red Cross helpers carrying an apparently unconscious young woman from the crowd. Such scenes were characteristic of the mass turnout that Kennedy’s visit to the Federal Republic sparked.
