During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, the population received the guest from overseas with extraordinary enthusiasm. Numerous people crowded behind barriers, many waving German and American flags. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and was intended to symbolically underscore the close ties between the USA and the Federal Republic of Germany.
