During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, dense crowds of people lined the streets in many places. The extraordinary enthusiasm of the population led to congestion and physical exhaustion among spectators at several stops along the route. The photograph shows Red Cross paramedics carrying a collapsed person from the crowd—a recurring sight during the mass gatherings of these days. The deployment of medical personnel along the parade routes had been prepared by authorities in view of the large crowds of spectators.
