During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, large crowds flocked to the streets at all stops along the route. The photograph shows densely packed spectators leaning over a barrier to catch a glimpse of the President. Kennedy’s visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and it sparked extraordinary enthusiasm among the West German population.
