In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy at a microphone podium during a public address, surrounded by accompanying persons. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and served to reaffirm American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
