In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership in the context of the Cold War. The still image shows Kennedy at a microphone podium during a public address; the visible chain of office in the background indicates an official ceremonial event. The visit took him to Cologne, Bonn, Frankfurt, and West Berlin, among other places, and resonated greatly with the German population against the backdrop of the Berlin Wall, erected in 1961.
