During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany on June 26, 1963, hundreds of thousands of West Berliners streamed into the streets to welcome the American President. The motorcade through the city expressed the enormous expectations of solidarity held by a population that had been under particular political pressure since the construction of the Wall in 1961. Kennedy’s visit was regarded as a visible signal of Western protection guarantees for West Berlin in the Cold War.
