In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. During the motorcades through the cities, large crowds received him with great enthusiasm. The open presidential car with American and German flags as well as the motorcycle escort in white uniforms were characteristic features of this trip. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the wall construction erected in 1961.
