During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets and received him with great enthusiasm. The photograph shows spectators throwing confetti from windows of a street building—a typical scene from the motorcades that accompanied Kennedy’s route. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and was a strong symbol of American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany.
