In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows a motorcade with the open presidential vehicle, flanked by motorcycle police and densely packed spectators with balloons. Such street scenes characterized the entire visit: the population received Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was a symbol of American solidarity with the Federal Republic and the divided West Berlin.
