During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands lined the streets and squares at several locations. The photograph taken from an elevated perspective shows a densely packed crowd following the visit. Kennedy’s trip took place in the context of the Cold War and Western solidarity with the city divided by the construction of the Wall in 1961. The enthusiastic reception by the population was one of the defining images of the entire visit.
