In June 1963, the visit to Germany by U.S. President John F. Kennedy received extraordinary support from the population. The photograph shows a densely packed crowd greeting the President with raised hands and waving flags; American and German flags lined the street. Such mass gatherings characterized the entire visit from June 23 to 26, 1963 and reflected the strong emotional attachment of the West German and West Berlin population to the United States during the Cold War.
