In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows a scene on a speaker’s platform, recognizable by the microphones and the German flag visible in the background. The context of the collection and the visible persons indicate the Berlin leg on June 26, 1963, when Kennedy appeared together with Governing Mayor Willy Brandt in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall. The visit was a central symbol of Western solidarity with West Berlin during the Cold War.
