The photograph shows from an elevated perspective a densely packed crowd at the rally during the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. In the left foreground, a sign reading “CHICAGO TEACHERS FOR INTEGRATED SCHOOLS” is clearly legible, documenting the demand for school integration and the participation of demonstrators from outside the region. In the center of the image, an elevated stage with barriers is visible, on which several people are standing; parked buses and trees can be seen in the background. The banner points to school racial segregation as one of the central issues of the civil rights movement, which the Supreme Court had already ruled against in 1954 in the Brown v. Board of Education decision, yet which persisted in practice in many places. The composition of the photograph illustrates the mass participation from various cities and social groups, which made the March on Washington one of the largest peaceful demonstrations in U.S. history.
