The photograph shows a dense crowd of people at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. Numerous signs from the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union are clearly visible, including slogans such as ‘Jobs and Freedom for Every American’, ‘Registration-Constitution YES, Segregation-Jim Crow NO’, and ‘Government of All People – For All The People – By All The People’. The slogans combine the central demands of the rally: equal civil rights, voting rights, the abolition of racial segregation (Jim Crow), and the right to work. The image documents the participation of Black and white demonstrators side by side and underscores the broad labor union engagement at one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement.
