The photograph shows a dense procession of demonstrators carrying banners, marching along the waterside path beside the Reflecting Pool toward the Lincoln Memorial. In the background, the Lincoln Memorial is clearly visible; on the opposite side of the water basin, additional groups of people can be seen. The reflections of the demonstrators in the water enhance the visual impact of the scene. The image documents the arrival of participants at the central rally at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement and opposed racial segregation while advocating for equal civil rights and economic participation.
