The photograph shows a dense march procession on a tree-lined street in Washington, D.C. Among the participants are women and men of Black and white races; several carry placards, clearly legible are the demand “Equal Rights Now” as well as a banner reading “We walk from New York City for Freedom – CORE”. The reference to CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) and the origin in New York City documents the nationwide participation in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. The image is exemplary of the peaceful mass protest that demanded civil rights and employment for the African American population and reached its climax at the rally at the Lincoln Memorial with Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
