Technical Challenges: The R-7, the first intercontinental rocket of the Soviet Union, was a technological breakthrough, but also prone to launch failures, especially in the early testing phases.
Significance for Space Travel: Despite these setbacks, the R-7 was further developed and eventually successfully used as a Sputnik launch vehicle (1957) and for the first manned space flight with Yuri Gagarin (1961).
