The photograph shows the boundary of the British sector immediately west of the Brandenburg Gate in August/September 1955. Two signs mark the crossing: a bilingual warning sign informs pedestrians in German (“Achtung! Sie verlassen nach 70m. West-Berlin”) and in English (“You are now leaving British Sector”) of the impending sector change. In the background, the war-damaged Brandenburg Gate is visible with a flag marking it as a Soviet-controlled area; ruins frame the image on the left. The Gate, once a symbol of national unity, stands in 1955 precisely at the sector border and is not freely accessible from West Berlin. The Allied sector signs, the nearly empty terrain, and the still-visible war damage converge here into a striking document of the divided city and everyday life during the Cold War.
