Historical background

Aerial shots, New York City, 1967 – Description:

The camera glides calmly over the heart of Manhattan. From a bird’s eye view, an urban panorama unfolds: densely packed skyscrapers cast long shadows on the geometrically laid out street canyons. The iconic Empire State Building stands out from the dense silhouette, still the undisputed landmark of the skyline.

Further south, the deeply stacked blocks of the Financial District can be seen, while in the distance the still incomplete Twin Towers of the new World Trade Centre construction site rise up like a promise.

Central Park lies like a huge, organised rectangle of green between the stone walls of the Upper East and West Sides – a breath of nature in the midst of the sea of concrete.

Yellow taxis move through the avenues like ants, freighters and ferries glide along the East River. A delicate veil of haze lies over everything – smog, light, time.

New York 1967 – a city in transition: a spirit of optimism, modernisation, but also social tensions. These shots capture a moment in history, shortly before the skyline was to change dramatically once again.
