The aerial photograph shows the course of the Berlin Wall at Potsdamer Platz with the characteristic death strip and the largely cleared border area. The Wall had been erected since August 1961 and divided the city into two halves. During his West Berlin visit on June 26, 1963, Kennedy inspected various sections of the Wall to gain an impression of the city’s division. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and culminated in the speech before Schöneberg City Hall.
