The photograph shows a generously designed public park with geometrically arranged flower beds, benches, and young trees in the foreground, set against the backdrop of modern, multi-story residential blocks with balconies. The buildings conform to West German housing standards of the early 1950s and were, according to the film context, constructed in 1954–55 under the Marshall Plan. Scattered pedestrians and strollers enjoy the green space in summer weather. The image is exemplary of West Berlin’s reconstruction: functional yet attractive residential settlements with public green spaces were intended to demonstrate improved living standards in the western part of the divided city. West Berlin thus presented itself as an urban countermodel to socialist city planning in the eastern sector and as a visible sign of the emerging economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder).
