Charles Chaplin Caught in a Cabaret (1914)

Historical context

Caught in a Cabaret (1914) is a two-act slapstick comedy from Keystone Studios starring Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand. It was directed by Mabel Normand, who also acted as Chaplin's creative partner – a rare case of a female director in early Hollywood.

Chaplin plays a shy waiter in a dance hall who pretends to be an ambassador from a foreign country in order to win the heart of a young woman (Mabel Normand). When his deception is exposed, a series of turbulent misunderstandings, fights, and entanglements ensues, typical of Keystone slapstick comedies.

The film is not only an example of the comic dynamic between Chaplin and Normand, but also shows how Chaplin began to develop his "Tramp" character at this time: charming, witty, but at the same time in constant danger of being caught up in his own lies and clumsiness.
