The photograph was taken in autumn 1944 in the Aachen area and belongs to the advance phase of Jack Lieb’s film, when US troops reached the first major German city. In the background, the characteristic concrete obstacles of the Siegfried Line (Westwall) — so-called dragon’s teeth — are visible, which were part of German border fortifications against an Allied invasion. The scene with local children in front of this military structure documents the everyday life of the civilian population immediately after the Allied advance. Such color footage from this phase of the Western campaign is extraordinarily rare.
