The photograph shows a bird’s-eye view of Cologne’s Old Town, taken presumably from the South Tower of Cologne Cathedral. Particularly noteworthy is the characteristic crossing tower of the Romanesque church of Groß St. Martin, which has defined the cityscape of the Rhine district since the Middle Ages. In the middle ground, the Rhine waterfront zone is visible, featuring a suspension bridge spanning the Rhine as well as river traffic. The dense jumble of roofs from the Gründerzeit period and older buildings of the Rhine suburb fills the foreground. In the travel film, this wide shot serves as the opening view of Cologne and connects the Rhine metropolis with its characteristic Romanesque churches and its lively river activity.
