The still shows the two characteristic towers of Cologne Cathedral in frontal, symmetrical framing. Clearly visible are the delicate Gothic tracery articulation of the tower shafts, the pointed crocket finials, and the lancet windows of the upper tower stories. In the lower portion of the image, the gable of the main portal is partially discernible. In the travel film, this shot serves as a striking landmark motif for the Cologne stop, immediately following the Hamburg harbor scenes. Cologne Cathedral, whose towers at 157 meters were the tallest in the world upon their completion in 1880, stands in the travel film as exemplary of medieval sacred architecture along the Rhine.
