The poster announces two concerts by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for September 4 and 5, 1955 in the concert hall of the University of Music; Eugen Jochum is listed as conductor and Siegfried Borries as soloist. The program includes Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music, Busoni’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, and Bruckner’s Symphony No. IV. The poster is part of a series of photographs taken in front of the Schiller Theatre, where the film cameraman documented Berlin’s cultural life in summer 1955. It testifies to the rapid revival of classical concert life in the western part of the divided city: despite omnipresent war damage, West Berlin maintained its claim as a cultural metropolis and used renowned institutions such as the Berlin Philharmonic as a showcase toward the East. The poster is thus also a document of West Berlin’s determination for cultural self-assertion during the Cold War.
