Feldherrnhalle, Munich – May 1945
In May 1945, the Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz stands heavily damaged, but still a striking building in the destroyed city. Its columns are battered, bullet holes and bomb fragments have scarred the façade, and parts of the roof have collapsed.
The lion sculptures on the staircase are surrounded by rubble, but they still stand – silent witnesses to the past. The square in front of the Feldherrnhalle is deserted and quiet. Once a place of Nazi propaganda, it is now a symbol of the end of a chapter in Munich’s history. The graffiti on the wall reads: “K.Z. Dachau – Velden – Buchenwald. I am ashamed to be German.” “P.H.”
