The still image shows the four-masted bark ‘Padua’ – one of the last great cargo sailing ships of the F. Laeisz shipping company – moored at the quay of Hamburg Harbor. In the foreground lies the smaller steam tug ‘Caudebec’ alongside; the elaborate rigging of the bark with its four masts and dense network of yards and ropes dominates the composition. The travel film uses this harbor scene to underscore Hamburg’s maritime importance as a world port. The shot is integrated into the sequence that, following the arrival of the ocean liner ‘St. Louis’ in Cuxhaven, presents Hamburg Harbor as the gateway to the journey through Germany. The juxtaposition of the traditional sailing cargo ship and the motorized steam tug illustrates the transition between two epochs of ocean-going shipping.
