The photograph shows Columbia House in the Tempelhof district of Berlin, which served as an Officers Club for the US forces in Berlin in 1955. In the foreground, an Army bus with US military license plates (USA-IA-0424) passes by, part of the regular transport operations of the American occupation forces. On the right side of the image, a civilian delivery truck belonging to Kolberg & Co. Berlin is visible, illustrating the coexistence of military and civilian traffic on West Berlin’s streets. The sweeping, monumental building of Columbia House with its characteristic transmission masts formed an important center of US military life in the occupied city. The scene exemplifies the daily Allied presence in the western part of Berlin and the close interweaving of US military operations and urban life in Cold War Berlin.
