This photograph was taken in spring 1944 in London and belongs to the opening section of Jack Lieb’s film, which documents life in England immediately before D-Day. Hyde Park was at this time a central location in London’s daily life, which despite five years of war and imminent invasion preparations retained its character as a public gathering place. With his 16mm Kodachrome camera, Lieb captured how the civilian population used the park—a rare color document of London street life shortly before the largest amphibious operation of the Second World War.
