The photograph shows the Hindenburg on the final leg of its Atlantic crossing, still intact in flight over New York City. A few hours later, on May 6, 1937, the airship met with disaster during its mooring maneuver at the naval base Lakehurst, New Jersey: it caught fire and burned completely in less than a minute. Of 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The flight over New York is among the last photographic documents of the Hindenburg in regular operation.
