The photograph shows, from an elevated perspective, the crowd that assembled on August 28, 1963 along the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In the background, the Washington Monument is visible, with rows of trees flanking both sides of the elongated assembly space. The view illustrates the scale of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which attracted approximately a quarter million participants. The rally at the Lincoln Memorial marked the climax of the demonstration and became historically significant primarily through Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The image documents the peaceful mass protest as a pivotal event in the U.S. civil rights movement and its central demands for equal civil rights and employment.
