The photograph shows a densely packed, racially mixed crowd during the rally at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. In the midst of the crowd, one person holds a small American flag; many participants wear summer clothing and, in part, badges. On the right edge of the image, a metal scaffold is visible, on which members of a camera or press team are positioned. In the background, the crowd extends far toward the tree-lined surroundings and a building. The joint presence of Black and white citizens was a visible characteristic of the march and documented the broad societal support for demands for civil rights and jobs.
