The photograph shows a man in the foreground holding an open black umbrella and looking directly at the camera. Behind him are additional demonstrators of different races visible, reflecting the broad participation in the event. The image was taken during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, one of the largest demonstrations of the U.S. civil rights movement. The man’s calm, concentrated facial expression exemplifies the determined, peaceful character of the protest. The march united tens of thousands of people who demanded equal civil rights and economic equality for the Black population of the United States.
