The still image shows the face of a young Black man in a calm, concentrated posture; in the background, a white woman wearing glasses is visible. The outdoor shot framed by trees can be attributed to the assembly events around the National Mall. Such close-ups of individual participants were part of the documentary visual language of the film, which aimed to capture the broad and multiracial participation in the March on Washington. The march on August 28, 1963 united hundreds of thousands of people who advocated for civil rights and equal participation in the workforce. The joint appearance of Black and white demonstrators was a deliberate signal against the legally enshrined racial segregation that still existed in large parts of the United States.
