The photograph shows a densely packed group of predominantly Black demonstrators enthusiastically raising their arms. In the foreground stands a boy in a striped shirt, next to him a young woman wearing a printed t-shirt; additional children and adults fill the background. The open joy and raised arms point to a snapshot of collective determination and confidence amid the march. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963 brought together hundreds of thousands of people demanding legal equality, an end to racial segregation, and equal economic opportunity. The participation of all age groups – visible in the children in the image – underscores that the civil rights movement mobilized broad segments of society.
