The photograph shows the rally stage at the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. In the center, a female singer and a guitarist stand at a lectern equipped with multiple microphones; additional persons crowd behind and beside the performers. On the left side of the image, press photographers hold cameras and binoculars; the entire platform is densely occupied. Musical performances were an integral part of the program at the Lincoln Memorial and accompanied the political speeches of the rally. They underscored the character of the march as a broad civil society mobilization for civil rights and jobs.
